Our Approach to Trauma Therapy

Our approach to trauma therapy is holistic, meaning we focus on treating the whole person rather than just the trauma symptoms. We understand that healing from trauma is a process that requires more than just talking about the traumatic experience. Our therapists use a combination of evidence-based techniques to help you overcome trauma and move forward with confidence.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

One of the core components of our trauma therapy program is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT is a proven treatment for trauma that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that may hold them back. Our therapists will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that incorporates CBT and other evidence-based techniques.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Our therapists also use eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to help individuals process and overcome traumatic experiences. EMDR is a unique therapy that involves guided eye movements while recalling traumatic memories. This technique has been shown to help individuals process and resolve traumatic memories safely and effectively.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of therapy that rewires the brain to resolve unpleasant memories and stored trauma. EMDR doesn’t erase traumatic experiences, but it makes thinking about them significantly less stressful. EMDR is also helpful for installing positive self-regard. As such, EMDR is considered a highly effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trauma, and a wide variety of other concerns.

How does it work?

EMDR is an integrative psychotherapy approach that incorporates eight phases of treatment. How long it takes an individual to experience the benefits of this therapy depends on their personal history. Treatment typically targets three different areas: past memories, present disturbance, and future actions. The goal of this treatment is to process information and experiences differently. Each session aims to leave the patient with healthy emotions, understanding, and fresh perspectives that will ultimately lead to healthy and useful future behaviors and interactions.  Learn more about the outline of EMDR treatment and what happens in an EMDR session here.
